The Unisphere is the unofficial symbol of Queens. The world's largest globe, this giant steel beauty can be seen from the LIE, Grand Central and Van Wyck.
The US Steel Corporation built the Unisphere for the 1964-1965 World's Fair as a symbol of world peace. It stands 140 feet high, 120 feet in diameter and weighs 900,000 pounds. Three rings circle the globe, representing the orbits of the first American astronaut, the first Russian cosmonaut and the first communications satellite to orbit the Earth. It was dedicated to "Man's Achievements on a Shrinking Globe in an Expanding Universe."
